Larry Bell: Stickman No. 12
Also known as the Sumer Series
FROM A GESTURE TO A MONUMENT
In the early 1990s, artist Larry Bell began developing a new body of work from computer-generated figures—fluid, gestural drawings that would ultimately become monumental sculptures.
For Stickman No. 12, Miles & Generalis Studios enlarged Bell's 22-inch figure to 22 feet.
At 22 inches, a sweeping line could simply describe the movement of a figure. At 22 feet, that same gesture had to become a physical structure. Tom Miles, Alex Generalis and their team translated Bell's small-scale figure into monumental form while preserving the movement, proportion and character of the original.
The full-scale model created by Miles & Generalis was then used in the subsequent casting process to produce the finished work in bronze.
