Nancy Graves: Sequi (1984–85)

THE ART OF DEFYING GRAVITY

Nancy Graves brought an extraordinary sense of movement to sculpture, combining botanical forms, sweeping curves and vivid color in compositions that seemed to defy gravity.

For Sequi, Miles & Generalis Studios enlarged Graves' original work and engineered the structural support necessary to bring her ambitious composition to monumental scale.

Standing 13 feet high and extending 20 feet in length, the sculpture presented a complex challenge. Its delicate, elongated forms and dramatically asymmetrical elements required careful consideration of weight, balance and structural integrity without compromising Graves' artistic vision.

Working with Graves, Tom Miles and Alex Generalis helped transform an intricate sculptural composition into a monumental work that appears almost weightless.
